EXIF ImageDescription and PM Captioning
« on: December 24, 2014, 02:38:17 PM »
I'm trying to understand image descriptions and captions.
A club member sends me ijpg images for posting on our photoclub website and he has entered an image description into the jpg.
It shows up in KUSO EXIF Viewer as an EXIF field ImageDescription

But when I look at this image (i option) in PM, the caption/Description field is empty. The club members caption is not to be seen anywhere.

BUT, when I enter a caption, PM overwrites the ImageDescription field and also creates two new fields with the same caption?

I don't understand what is going on here?  I've looked in the manual, but now found anything that explains what I am seeing here.

Thanks

Jim

PM doesn't change EXIF captions, it does edit IPTC and XMP captions however.  EXIF descriptions are a relic of the past and are not Unicode compatible.

Thanks, Kirk,
Now I know just what PH changes I will try to see what is going on with this image.

What is a reliable EXIF/IPTC/XMP viewer for windows. that can report accurately what is in a file. KUSO is what I've been using, but it does not distinguish between EXIF/IPTC/XMP

I would recommend Phil Harvey's exiftool. It is the tool for investigating metadata.
