Zoom Window Goes Black on Sony .arw Raw Files
« on: October 16, 2015, 07:58:57 AM »
Hi.  I'm having a new issue since upgrading to the latest PM and El Capitan on MAC.

Images will zoom fine when viewing in JPG.  But after hitting "Q" to view the RAW file, the zoom window first pixelates (like usual), but then after a few seconds goes black and the zoomed RAW file cannot be viewed (at any zoom level).

Attached are progress screen shots showing what happens.  This did not happen in the past.  It usually took about 5 to 10 seconds for the .arw RAW file to enlarge, but it always enlarged at all zoom levels.  The PM viewing screen never went black before.

I have also attached a snapshot of "About PM" and "About My Mac"

Any Ideas what setting I need to change to avoid this?

Thanks

I suspect that Apple has dropped RAW rendering support for your camera.  What happens if you open the same image in the Preview app?  Does it render?

Hi.  Thanks for the quick response.  The image loads fine and zooms fine in Preview.  Please see attachments...

OK.  Then it should be possible for PM to use Apple's RAW rendering technology to render your files.

What is your Memory Cache size in PM's Caching preferences?  If it is higher than 512, reduce it to 512.

Hi Kirk.

I'm sending you two new attachments.

1)  Snapshot of PM Cache Settings (Cache is set to 512)

2)  Quicktime Movie of the issue... Here is what it captures

- Start in JPG mode (zero zoom)
- Zoom to 2x (jpg)
- Zoom back to zero (jpg)
- Hit Q
- Wait for histogram to show it has been loaded as RAW
- Hit Zoom to 2x (RAW)
- Wait for "Black Screen" (no image)
- Zoom to zero in RAW (image comes back)
- Hit Q (back to JPG mode)
- Zoom to 2x (jpg)
- Zoom to zero (jpg)

Hopefully this will give you a clear understanding of the issue.  Please let me know if you need anything further.

Thanks

Please post your PM.log.  Go to the Help menu and choose Reveal Support Data... Then attach that file to your reply to this message.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

PM.Log as requested

I can see in the log that PM is running out of memory when trying to deal with your full size image.  Try setting the Memory Cache even lower.  Try 256 instead of 512.

Hi Kirk,

At 256, even the thumbnails will not render clearly...Please see attachments...and another log file.

Thanks

Please post your latest log.  Does this happen with the very first image you try to zoom into, or does it take several images before the problems happen?

Hi Kirk,

Attached is the latest Log File as requested.

At this point it seems like this issue cannot be fixed with the current PM version.  I have tried numerous, numerous cache sizes, tried loading the images from a different desktop hard drive (SSD), tried using a different monitor, and even downloaded a new copy of the current version and installed it.  I changed zoom levels, changed color settings, and used different images from different cameras.

In all cases, rendering RAW files was either slow or unable to be accomplished at all.  If I set preferences to render RAW files instead of using "JPG files for speed", thumbnails are generated ok in a contact sheet, but after trying to view 2 or 3 previews, everything comes to a halt on a single image and I can't even close the preview window.

In all cases, once things start to slow down or stop, I generally have have to Force Quit PM to get out of the program.  You will probably see this in the log file.

At this point it looks like I will have to wait for the next update for all functionality to be available on El Capitan.  I did not update my laptop to El Capitan yet, and all the images I have been trying to use on my desktop work fine on my MacBook Air, including zooming on RAW files, without an issue.  It's quite slow, but it still works on Yosemite.

Thanks for your help with this.  Please let me know if you have any other suggestions after viewing the log file.

There is a bug in El Capitan's RAW rendering library that quickly exhausts all of Photo Mechanic's memory when RAW files are rendered.  We suggest turning off RAW rendering if you're running Apple's El Capitan (Mac OS X 10.11) operating system.
