Apostrophe being replaced by a question mark
« on: October 22, 2017, 06:49:53 PM »
Hi everyone

When I have an apostrophe in a Code Replacement text file (eg Otago's Craig Millar), when I enter it into the IPTC Info the apostrophe is replaced by a question mark (Otago?s Craig Millar).

Does anyone know the reason (and solution)??

Cheers

I suspect that your apostrophe is not quite the character you expect it to be and that it can only be represented in Unicode instead of ASCII.  Please post your file here and I'll take a look at it.  (If you don't want to post the entire file, copy the line out to a new file and post that file instead.)

Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your text file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Hi Kirk. Many thanks for your reply. From what you said, I've cracked it!

I was using the wrong text editor.

I was using the standard editor in iOS (TextEdit), but have just switched over to BBEdit which allows Unicode (UTF-8) encoding, and that's solved the problem.

I can now apostrophise to my heart's content!

Thanks again for your help .... much appreciated.

Cheers

You're welcome.  Based on your solution, I can tell you with a fair amount of certainty that the apostrophe character is not the standard apostrophe character.  Other applications may still have problems with the 'apostrophe' that you used.  If that isn't important to you, then disregard.

Otherwise, use this as your apostrophe character: '
(copy and paste it.)

As a side not, the problem isn't that TextEdit doesn't write UTF8 (which it most certainly does), but the fact that, unless you explicitly change your settings, it automatically replaces the apostrophe ' with a quote symbol which is not what you want in this case.
