Mac dual-core 2.66 Intel gets slow/nearly dead with PM 4.4.3.3

Been a PM-fan for years, I´ve got a problem with PM 4.4.3.3
I have 500 TIF files in a folder, each approx. 35 MB (from CS2).
PM gets slow, almost dead, when I open the contact sheet. Doesn´t crash, but can´t manage the load of pictures.
Is 2 GB original ram sufficient in the new and well running Mac.
The same folder - 500 TIF files - works smoothly at my old G4 powerbook (1 GB ram), same PM version.
Where do I find the solution...

I don't know.  Can you try the 4.5 beta and see if it fares any better?  If not, I would need for you to upload a representative sample of your images that we could duplicate a couple of hundred times so we could try and duplicate the issue on one of our systems.

What is the default sort in the contact sheet?  If it is set to sort by capture time, PM can take a long time to scan a large folder, especially if they're large tiffs.  Sorting by filename avoids this.
