color coding in preview extremely slow

Hello, I used to do all my culling and color coding in the preview mode but now it takes 6-10 seconds to register the change for each picture. I'm not running other programs until I'm ready to process then transfer them to lightroom. Color coding is still very fast outside of the preview mode. Is there a way to improve/return to the fast speeds that I was able to have? I am on the same computer, an older mac, osx el capitan version 10.11.6. My PM is 5.0 build 19695.
