Slow preview render with iMac Pro 10 core 64 GB ram
« on: November 24, 2018, 05:41:21 PM »
I have purchased this iMac and paid dearly for it but the previews do not Rez fast, if I use the arrow keys there is a little lag. I did uncheck to render RAW for previews but it isn't as fast as I had hoped.

I have attached a screenshot of my memory settings, hopefully that's what's wrong with it and I can fine tune the memory setting for PM?

Your Disk Cache doesn't need to be that large though it shouldn't cause a slowdown except on quit.

Your Memory Cache should be reduced to 256MB.

Though I don't expect either of these changes to make substantive differences in performance.

What kind of RAW files are you working with, and on what kind of media are they stored?

I'm just viewing Sony a9's raws, so they are small files, on an average about 1500 of them. They ' are stored on the computer SSD.

I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic log.  In Photo Mechanic go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Finder window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

It not just the previews but even after changing a bunch of color classes to the thumbnails (via keyboard),  after a while of doing it the spinning ball kicks in! This is more than 8k computer. I was hoping it'll be speeding through those operations but it clearly isn't. Hopefully when PM 6 will support multicore it'll be much faster.

Please find attached the log,

Thanks !

PM5 already utilizes multiple processors.

I'll take a look at your log and let you know what I find.

There are a number of exceptions occurring in your log.  Did you reduce the Memory Cache size to 256MB?

Do you have a color profile assigned to your display?  What macOS version are you using on your system?

What are the exceptions? Errors?

I do have a custom ICC profile made with I1 Display pro, running on MacOS Mojave 10.14.1 ( it was slow also with Sierra).

I will reduce the memory cache to 256, but you had already mentioned it should not make a significant improvement so I 'll do it right now.

Essentially, yes.  Looks like low memory conditions to me.  Reducing the Memory Cache size should help.  PM5 is a 32-bit application and as such can only use a maximum of 4GB of RAM, much of which is taken up by PM's application code, shared libraries, and data structures unrelated to the images themselves.

If reducing the Memory Cache to 256MB or even 128MB doesn't help then I suggest contacting our support folks at:

Ok Thank you very much I will.

Did you first try reducing your Memory Cache size?  Did that make any difference?

Yes I did reduce it to 128. I'll be off in a couple of days and I will be able to see for sure, but as I downloaded my files the first impression tonite isn't too comforting. It seemed to be the same.

If it's still slow then post your latest zipped PM.log and I'll take a look at it again.

I'm not seeing the level of errors that were appearing before (now they're just warnings that are appearing minutes apart).

I encourage you to contact support for interactive troubleshooting.  The delays in communication of the forum are just not suited for fixing this kind of problem.
