Install PM 4.5.1 over PM 4.4.3.3
« on: May 17, 2007, 09:22:56 PM »
Hello Kirk,

windows XP.
so I installed version 4.5.1 over version 4.4.3.3
Version 4.5.1 installs to "C:\Program Files\Camera Bits\Photo Mechanic 4.5\Photo Mechanic.exe" (default location) whereas the old version 4.4.3.3 by default is installed at "C:\Program Files\Camera Bits\Photo Mechanic\Photo Mechanic.exe"
So now I have 2 versions coexisting on my machine.
How to delete the old version without harming the new installation? Do the 2 versions share any components?
thanks, nati

From my understanding of it (I am just an user), you shouldn't install two versions concurrently. At least not a beta and a regular version. You better uninstall both versions, and install just the later. Keep the old version setup file around in case there is problem with 4.5.1, although in my experience it works great! Your registration info and all your settings (FTP, stationeries, etc) should not get deleted upon uninstall. Just to make sure, do backup them before (it's a good idea anyway to backup them, after all you might have a lot of keywords and servers etc). The settings are AFAIK stored in your home folder, in Application Data/Camera Bits/Photo Mechanic (or perhaps Camera Bits Inc, I think this changed between 4.4 and 4.5). You can also backup them directly from PM, If I remember correctly. Hope this helps, Frantisek

The two versions can coexist quite fine.  They do not share components other than preferences which is fine.  I made sure that you can keep 4.4.3.3 and 4.5.1 on the same machine so that if you find that you are having troubles with 4.5.1 you can always go back to using 4.4.3.3 if you want.

No need to uninstall.

Kirk,
I think I am happy with V 4.5.1 and wish to uninstall V 4.4.3.3
Guess I'm asking if I uninstall 4.4.3.3 using the uninstall utility, will I lose anything (such as my prefs) on version 4.5.1
Thanks again,
Nati

No preferences will be lost in an uninstall.  But you may have to reinstall 4.5.1 after you do the uninstall due to how the uninstaller works.

Kirk,
I uninstalled version 4.4.3.3 and indeed as you said version 4.5.1 and the preferences were left intact.
Still had to reinstall 4.5.1 to restore the Autoplay/ ingest disk function, which I lost during the uninstall.
Thanks
Nati
