Unexplained crop on .orf raw files
« on: May 08, 2023, 09:35:05 AM »
I’ve just ingested some Olympus OM-1 files for the first time and there’s an issue that has me stumped. All raw .orf images appear to be cropped/resized to 3200 x 2400. This is only an issue with raw, the jpg files show up full-size. As a test I tried saving a raw file as a jpg without any resizing or cropping and it saved a 3200 x 2400 file.
Here is some of the relevant metadata:

cropheight:  2400
cropwidth:  3200
hascrop:  0
height:  3912
width:  5220
pixels:  20.5M
printsize:  17.4 x 13.0 inches
resolution:  300 pixels/inch

Everything is correct except the cropheight and cropwidth. Any idea what’s happening here?

When viewing RAW files, Photo Mechanic displays the JPEG embedded in your RAW file. This is embedded into the file by the camera at the time that it creates the RAW. Some cameras don't put a full-sized JPEG inside their RAW files, and I believe this is common amongst most Olympus cameras.

Thanks for the info. My previous cameras have always had full-size previews so it never crossed my mind. How unfortunate... makes it harder to evaluate an image.
Any good workaround suggestions?
I read about "Enable RAW Rendering" as a possible workaround but that doesn't sound like a great option. Is PM still working on their own built-in RAW renderer?
I don't like shooting raw+jpg but I suppose that might be the least offensive plan.

Check the settings in your camera and see if it has an option to create a full-sized preview.

It's not a great option, agreed.  It is far too slow and cumbersome.

Is PM still working on their own built-in RAW renderer?

We're evaluating options.

That would certainly eliminate the issue entirely.
