RAW+JPEG mismatch
« on: August 21, 2023, 10:49:07 AM »
I have photos where Photomechanic couples the RAW and JPEG together. The problem is these are not the same photo. I was photographing an event recently with dual cameras and made the mistake of shooting one camera on JPEG and the other camera on RAW. There was also some overlap in file names between the two cameras. How do fix this?

Split the pairing up by using Command+J or Ctrl+J. Change the sort type on your Contact Sheet to "Sort by {serial}". Select all the images from one of the cameras and rename them using the sequence variable (and some other characters to make them unique from the file names from the other camera).

That works. Thank you! I just wish PM used different criteria for combining RAW+JPEG because this problem could have easily been overlooked and I would have ended up missing photos. I just happened to notice certain photos not present when transferred LR.

Using image data other than the filename would have performance implications. Pairing by filename should be nearly instantaneous, anything else would require reading significantly more of the file.

There are a few ways to avoid this in the future:
1) In the camera, change the filename prefix to something unique per camera, so even if the numbering overlaps, the filenames won't.
2) Ingest to different subfolders of the primary destination. You could do this using the Ingest Sequence variable to create a separate folder per ingest, or even set up something like a code replacement that uses the camera's serial number to then name the folder accordingly.

This is helpful. I will definitely do things for next time. Changing the file names on this batch ended up messing up LR and I had to relink all the existing photos but got all my photos eventually.
