PM 2024.8 Build 7765 Ingest Failures
(1/1)
Robert Edwards Media:
PM 2024.8 Build 7765 on Windows 10 Pro 10.0.19045 Build 19045
Issue: PM will not ingest any files from memory cards; hangs on "Scanning Source Paths" during ingest.
From PM.Log: "CBFileIO.cpp:755 Could not open '[pathname]' for 'rb' access. Sleeping 500ms and trying again." PM makes 21 attempts for each folder on the memory card, but all attempts fail and no images are ingested.
Issue is 100% reproduceable using two different: Nikon Z9 (firmware 5.0), CFe cards (Sony Tough 512GB & ProGrade Gold 512GB), memory card readers (Sony MRW-G1), USB 3.1 cables, and USB ports on my laptop (Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen6). Conversely, Windows 10 OS sees the memory card, folder structure, and files with folders fine, and can copy files manually to local drive without issue.
PLEASE NOTE: This error *does not* happen in the previous build 2024.6 7758, neither before I updated to build 7765 a few days ago, or after I fell back to 7758 this morning. Card ingest operations worked fine this morning on the first attempt after falling back to 2024.6 Build 7758.
PM configuration and log files available upon request.
Kirk Baker:
Robert,
Do you have anti-virus software installed? If so, I think it is denying Photo Mechanic access to your files.

Robert Edwards Media:
Hi Kirk, yes, I'm running Bitdefender Total Security build 27.0.41.194. The app is configured with anti-virus scanning & active threat defense exclusions for three file types: .NEF (Nikon RAW), .JPG, and .XML. .NEF & .XML were the only file types at play for the aforementioned ingest issue.
I've run this Bitdefender configuration with Photo Mechanic for several years now, without issue, up-to and including 2024.06 build 7578. However, something seems to have changed with the next build, 2024.08 build 7765. Just speculating, but could this be related to the Windows Defender SmartScreen / recently-updated code signing certificate situation? Could PM be installing in an "untrusted" state?
On a related note, I'm curious why 2024.06 build 7578 shows no available updates (Help > Software Updates) when 2024.08 build 7765 is available for download from the Forum. Is 2024.08 build 7765 a beta release?

We found the problem with Ingest and it will be fixed in the next update. It has nothing to do with antivirus software.

Because the update mechanism was broken. I also fixed that for the next release, though current versions will still have the problem and won't find updates.
