Canon HEIF files
« on: July 09, 2025, 10:14:42 AM »
I'm aware of workarounds but I'm wondering if there are any plans yet to allow PM to read & display thumbnails / embedded info from the Canon CR3 files produced alongside their HDR-PQ mode i.e.HIC files? TIA

No, we haven't figured out a way of extracting that data and decoding it.

I just want to follow up on this, as it looks like you did a trial of the new version of Photo Mechanic quite some time ago, and the workarounds to this issue have changed since then, so while we cannot specifically grab the HEVC preview embedded in these files and show that to you, the experience is much improved over using Adobe DNG Converter to either deliver JPEG previews or create DNG copies of these images. If you are interested in testing out these changes, please email support@camerabits.com so we can set you up with a trial license.

Many thanks for the offer but I have decided not to bother with the Canon HIC files.  Instead, I'm shooting only in RAW then using DxO PureRAW for making DNG's, scanning all in to PM. At the moment it feels like Canon are the Betamax & others are the VHS of the 'new' format !
