Search fail
« on: August 30, 2025, 04:00:10 AM »
Why would a search for ‘hand lens trafalgar’ not find a jpg file named:
71-653 Hand Over Lens.jpg

with caption containing:
Police officer covers my lens with his hand while his colleagues prevent TV crew from filming police assaults on striking Liverpool Dockers & Reclaim the Streets protesters in Trafalgar Square, London 1997.

A search for 'media protest jpg’ finds the file (media & protest are in the keywords).
assault, attack, camera, cameraman, censorship, control, demo, demonstration, enforcement, hand, harassment, horizontal, journalism, journalist, march, media, media harassment, obstruction, photographer, photography, police, press, protest, stop, street, surveillance

I’ve uploaded a copy of the file.

It's probably me missing something so thanks for any insights!

Search is a major part of my workflow & the implication of this apparent fail is that I may not be finding everything that I should. That could be a serious problem so I'd appreciate some help from Kirk or anyone from support - even if only to tell me that I'm an idiot.

So this one stumped me too, but Kirk figured it out.

'Lens' is one of the field names that can be used for searching, so basically with the search that you are doing, you are searching for "hand (in any of the default searched fields) AND a lens used value of 'trafalgar'". Of course, you have no lens called 'trafalgar' in your catalog, so this search turns up nothing.

If you end up with any of the the field names or their aliases (which can be found in Catalog -> Searchable Fields), you can wrap them in double-quotes so that it knows that its a search term and not a field name

Example:
hand "lens" trafalgar

will find the image that you posted.

Ha! Thanks to you both. I'll try to remember for the next time.

Sorry to be slow replying - I'd checked the 'notify' box but didn't get a notification for the 2nd of these replies.
