Show .af (Affinity) image files in the contact sheet

We can see the previous Affinity Photo .afphoto files in contact sheets. Unfortunately the new Affinity .af files are not visible.
Would it be possible to treat these .af files in the same way that .afphoto files are handled? I think they are basicaly the same files, only the extension changed.

I tried changing the extension on one of these .af files to .afphoto and Photo Mechanic recognized it and displayed a preview for it, so if it is just a matter of recognizing the different extension there should be no problem doing that.
