You can open multiple folders into a single contact sheet window/tab and then, yes you can search/sort/filter them all at once.  You can either open the parent folder and all of its subfolders as a single contact sheet, or you can open folders individually into a single contact sheet.  The context menus in both the Favorites and Navigator allow you to do this.
