Setting GPS coordinates from KML file...
« on: September 17, 2007, 12:03:27 AM »
Hi,

I use a GPS to track my position. This track can then be exported in KML format, which is understood by Google Earth to display the track on the map. It would be great if PM could use the KML file to set the GPS coordinates (just match up times and positions).

Cheers, Fons.

I second that I am working on a similar basis (different GPS unit). Logging track into a timestamped file. PM would be great to add GPS codes to the images based on the timecode. Of course the simple manual editing possibility of the GPS info would be also great.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

I don't (yet) own a GPS, but when I get one, I would certainly like the ability to "synchronize" the track log of  the GPS with the images.  This suggestion is therefore wholeheartedly supported!

Since iPhone 3G has a built in GPS module it also would be a great way to have an App for iPhone to log the tracks (since you allways have your phone with you) and then to be able to synchronise the logged path with PM.

There is an iPhone app called GPS Tracker that will log your positions.  Check out http://www.instamapper.com/

the app uploads your position info to your account on instamapper.com  - From there you can download track logs in CVS or KML formats.

being able to have Photo Mechanic utilize the track logs would be awesome. :)

Sounds good, but I would like much better a self standing app. I wouldn't like to send my location to anyone just have it logged for later use. And this app cannot record location in the background meaning you have to have the iPhone (I mean not only the device but the screen too) turned on, and the app in the foreground, meaning even a phone call stops the program and geo logging as well. But still a good start.

There is another product, 'RoboGeo' which does exactly what is being asked for, which I purchased.  But I would love it if I didn't need a separate program to do it.  Consider this another vote for this feature.
