preserved filename

Is there a way to copy the filenames of images in the field 'preserved filename', before renaming the files?
(I'm new with photomechanic.)

Where is this field 'preserved filename' found?

I think the field name is: xapMM:PreservedFileName

I think this is a damned useful field for most photography workflows.
You can see the field in action when you do a batch rename in Bridge.

I use now ExifTool in a Perl routine to do the updates, but it would be very useful if this could be done in PM.

No.  Photo Mechanic has no capability to do what you're asking.
