Viewing adjusted RAW files in PM
« on: July 13, 2008, 12:01:38 AM »
Hi,

I'm trialling a version of PM and will probably buy it.

But one show stopper is this:

When I edit RAW files in Photoshop and then view them again in PM, it doesn't show my adjustments that I made to that image.

Is there a setting I can change to view the corrected image, or is it a limitation of the software.

Thanks in advance,
Simon  ;)

The limitation is in Adobe's software.  It doesn't update the RAW file's embedded JPEG preview to reflect the rendered changes.  If you convert to DNG and use DNG, Adobe's software will update the embedded JPEG preview and then the changes will show up in Photo Mechanic.

HTH,

Many thanks, Kirk.

Is it possible to view the RAW file in PM instead of the embedded JPG image then?

I realise this might slow things down, but is it possible?

Or am I mis-understanding the way a RAW file reveals itself?

Actually, I since found the answer to the question above.

I do have another question though:

Sometimes I shoot RAW, sometimes JPG.

When I've shot JPG, how do I launch JPGs from PM into Adobe Camera Raw to adjust there (like a RAW file) instead of into 'normal' Photoshop?

Thanks,
Simon

If you're on the Mac OS X platform then it is possible to get PM to render the RAW file, but it won't look the way it did when you adjusted it in Adobe's products since they use their own proprietary RAW rendering engine that they don't share with third parties.

I think ACR only works with RAW files.

ACR used to be 'Raw only' until CS3 came out.  Now it can edit JPGs in just the same way as Raw files.

From Bridge, you would Ctrl-R all files (Raw or JPG) and it would treat them all the same.

Of course, you have more room with a Raw file, but many of the principles are the same.

That's fine though.  If I need to dive into Bridge to ACR the JPGs in PS then it's not exactly a showstopper.  It's not actually all that often I JPG shoot.

Thanks,
Simon. ;)

I think what you are looking for is in

Photoshop>Preferences>File Handling

There is a checkbox for "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files"

After checking that, when you select a jpeg and choose Edit Photo in PM, it will open in ACR not photoshop

Excellent!  That's exactly it.

Many thanks,
