Printing a Proof sheet with imbedded info?
« on: July 14, 2008, 02:19:51 PM »
Hello again!

Workflow question.

I edit proofs quickly in raw (contrast adjustment) before I send anything out. I make the adjustments in raw and then hit 'done', which saves a sidecar xmp file with those adjustments. If I wanted to run the proof page through cs3 those adjustments would show on the sheet.

Is there any way to have photomechanic integrate that xmp info when it prints proofs? CS3 is hella slow to make a proof sheet - and photomechanic does a way faster and better job. There are ways to get around this, but it would involve a bunch of extra steps (too much time in front of the machine here...)

Please let me know :)

It should allow you to use any variables you want to use in the Proofs.  What variables are you trying to use?

Do you have PM using an XMP sidecar-only workflow?  Post a screenshot of the IPTC/XMP tab of your Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog and I can look at it and make suggestions for changes if needed.  Use the 'Additional Options...' link while you are composing your response to this message to upload your screenshot.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Your settings need to be changed to read XMP sidecars before embedded IPTC.  See screenshot below.

I changed everything to be identical to your cap - here is mine now.

& restarted my machine. The sidecar files are showing in the folder (but not in PM - this is normal yes?)

This is what I should get...

And this is what PM gives me....

Ideas? :)

Also... its doing the same thing it was before. :(

Both of the above files are at 300 dpi 1200 pixels wide.... why would the PM one have such crappy resolution? There is no printer scaling or other silliness going on - it is a straight jpeg from the pdf. Both files are identical - except that cs3 made the first sheet.

?

I appreciate you trying to help me with this. :)

It looks like all you need to do for the filenames is use {filename} instead of {filenamebase}.  As for the low quality, try turning on the "Use printer scaling" setting.

Changed it to {filename}

Still is not printing the raw changes.

Still is poor quality at the same level of zoom compared to what I get in cs3.

Carla,

The filenames printed underneath the thumbnails still don't have their file extensions (.cr2) on them?

As for the quality, this may be a bug.  I am looking into the code right now.  You could try changing the Resolution field to 600 and that may help.

I'll let you know what I find.

Yes, they do have the file ext now...

I will try changing to 600.

Thank you. :)

What do you mean by XMP sidecars not applying?  Do you mean that the proprietary adjustment settings created by Adobe Camera RAW are not reflected in the output of Photo Mechanic?  If the answer is yes, then unfortunately we have no solution for you other than to use DNG.  You see Adobe does not share their rendering technology to other developers like us.  It would be difficult indeed for us to be able to write our own RAW rendering engine that makes exact renderings of Adobe Camera RAW settings.

If you use DNG, then the adjustments are rendered into the DNG's embedded JPEG preview which PM can easily display.

I am confused!

You just got done telling me to change the settings so PM would read xml files and apply the settings... and now you're saying that they are proprietary and can't be read?
