corrupt nef's
« on: August 09, 2008, 11:59:00 PM »
I accidentally removed a card before ejecting it, then put another card in the reader.  Now all files on the second card are corrupt ("unsupported format variant" in Photo Mechanic 4.5.3.1) ("unable to read this type of file" in Nikon Capture 4.4.2).

Vitals - OS: Mac OSX10.5.4, iMac 2.16 Ghz Core2 Duo, 2GB RAM, Lexar FireWire CompactFlash reader, Nikon D200, Sandisk Extreme III 2.0 GB.

Are these files beyond repair?  Or is there any way or anyone who might be able to repair the files?  Thanks for your help.

Those particular files probably are not repairable.  But as long as you haven't reformatted the card yet, just perform the Ingest again (unmount/eject the card and re-mount it again) and make sure you turn off Incremental Ingest or it will likely skip all of the files.  If you have reformatted the card but didn't shoot new pictures over it, then use a utility application like ImageRescue on the card and you should be able to get nearly all of your photos back again.

Basically what happened when you didn't unmount the card properly and then inserted another card was that your first card's cached data was used for the second card.  The OS didn't notice the change so the unified disk cache for the original card was not flushed at all.
