Can I rename images with sequence number reset each day
« on: February 17, 2009, 08:36:19 PM »
Is it possible to setup Photo Mechanic so that when renaming images (either on ingest or later) the sequence number resets with each new day that comes across from {datesort}. For example, if I shoot across two days I currently get something like:

image-20090217-0001.jpg
image-20090217-0002.jpg
image-20090217-0003.jpg
image-20090217-0004.jpg
image-20090218-0005.jpg
image-20090218-0006.jpg
image-20090218-0007.jpg
image-20090218-0008.jpg

What I would like to have is:

image-20090217-0001.jpg
image-20090217-0002.jpg
image-20090217-0003.jpg
image-20090217-0004.jpg
image-20090218-0001.jpg
image-20090218-0002.jpg
image-20090218-0003.jpg
image-20090218-0004.jpg

With the reset occurring for each new day, of course.

It's not a big deal with smaller numbers, but if I shoot a lot the first day it tends to scare me when the first image I see for the next day is something like "image-20090218-1527.jpg". Make me think I lost 1526 images somewhere. I realize that I could do this by hand by selecting each date and resetting the sequence number that way, but I'd rather have it all happen in one go.

Thanks!

I've been trying to figure this out as well.

Photo Mechanic does not have such a feature.

Wish it did!

I too sometimes rename pictures taken over a day or three and my system is to restart the frame number like Alan.

I wonder if it would be possible to script something to do this? It sounds easy  ;) Could a script which looks at the 'day' and if it finds it has changed resets the sequence number be  added into the 'rename' string? I know I can (and do) call code replacements in the rename dialog, but a script?

It might work to take a few seconds and manually start a new folder on your storage card for each new day of shooting in your camera settings (maybe at the same time you check other settings, such as date, time, etc.)  Could even label the folder, or not.  That way when PM ingests off of card or hard drive it is from folders matching new days and it would probably be able to achieve what you want.  Not sure.
