Alternative Web Gallery Look
« on: July 31, 2006, 09:04:35 AM »
To me the best thing about Photo Mechanic is the ability to create functional web galleries from my Canon RAW files at nearly the speed of sound.  Without a doubt this application is far ahead of anything else that I've ever used.

The downside is that the standard template is dull as dishwater.  Other than the background color and font size I'm unable to customize the gallery.  Is there a way to create a different template with an html editor and subsitute it for the standart template?

Even the ability to move the type would be a stellar improvement.

Version 4.5 will have a customizable (programmable) template system.  It will still be fast.

Early 2007.  But to customize the look you'll have to do some scripting.

Doug, Everyone,

It would be helpful if you could point me to some websites that have layouts that you like.  We plan to have a number of predefined templates, each of which can be copied by you and customized further if you like.  So if you have a couple that you see out on the web that you already like, then tell me how I can find them (give me a URL...)

Thanks,

-Kirk

I like the very "simple" designs that most of the professional guys use to display the pictures:

http://www.richardavedon.com/    Very basic, very simple, very nice
http://www.jeanloupsieff.com/       Nice & Simple
http://www.ralphgibson.com/         OK - it's flash, but still simple! a good flash one.
http://www.horvatland.com/          Concept is good, navigation need improvement.
http://www.maryellenmark.com/      Nice !
http://www.corbijn.co.uk               Basic
http://www.dago.dk                       Good - but need a "play" switch as well.
http://www.erikrefner.com              Good, but takes to long to load
http://www.jakobcarlsen.dk             should be easy to implement that style
http://www.jamesnachtwey.com      basic concept! - needs some "text" on the right....

Thanks.  Some of those are Flash-based and we won't be doing Flash generation.  Some of them are back-end powered by PHP scripts feeding on a database, and we won't be doing that.  The www.dago.dk one, and the last two are very doable.

Others, please feel free to post your favorites, but you might as well leave out the Flash-based ones.

I did not know that you replied to my message.

With this idea if you could give the option of thumbnails for this layout it would be better.

Mainly I am not asking for anything fancy. Just good basic layout. Here are two quick samples of an existing PhotoMechanic gallery with some branding and ID space.

http://www.douglaslevere.com/clients/photomechanic/Web_Gallery_1.jpg
http://www.douglaslevere.com/clients/photomechanic/Web_Gallery_2.jpg

As well a gallery that shows thumbnails (if real they would be in a horizontal nav window so you could browse. The basic photoshop gallery options are a good start but we need the ability to put a logo, title of gallery and contact info (email, phone and address).

Thanks for listening.
