How does the incremental ingest feature work?

How does the incremental ingest feature work?

Specifically, how does PM know which photos have been ingested previously?

Does PM handle this or the OS?

Is there some indicator for each unique filename?

Is this indicator stored on the computer or on the card itself?

Photo Mechanic puts a very small file on the card in order to keep track of the card.  Using the identifier in that file, it keeps a log of what files it has ingested in its cache on your computer.

The OS does not 'help out' in any way.

Very good.

Is this little tag file specific to PM or do other apps reference it also?

I have PM installed on two computers and use the same SD card with both, will photos marked as "ingested" by one machine appear as "ingested" when the card is placed in the other machine? i.e., will the two instances of PM be in sync as far as never ingesting anything more than once.

It's specific to Photo Mechanic.

The data that logs what files have been Ingested is not stored on the card, instead it is stored on the specific computer that did the Ingesting.  If you go to another computer it will download all of the files.
