Update Engine - Alternative to Web Browser based

Hi everyone, thanks for a great product.

We just wanted to ask the developers if they had / would consider something like http://sparkle.andymatuschak.org/ or one of the other small update engines for the update checking in PhotoMechanic.

We like to keep our version up to date but the current way it checks is annoying when we are working in a hurry. We have to dismiss dialog boxes and open web browsers which slows us down and becomes an irritation 

Something like Sparkle or one of the other little update engines are free to integrate, they do not bother the user until an update is available, then downloads it seamlessly in the background with no opening of web browsers etc.

Photographers are always trying to speed up workflow and every redundant dialog box or app opening we can avoid the better..

Well you can adjust the frequency to as long as a month if you'd like, or you can turn it off altogether.  The 'Software Update...' command on the application menu (Mac OS X) or Help menu (Windows) will allow you to adjust those parameters to be less bothersome.

but as we often send Bob very technical and up to date info on issues with the very latest releases, we want it to check every day. We don't want it to open a browser to do that though or bother us if there is no update

we beta test PM and do know all the little tweaks and prefs it was just a suggestion based on feedback from many photographers and our own experience. We felt a integrated update engine might be a nice touch and the update mechanism how it is now is something we have mentioned to us a lot.

We love the software and its features maybe we should post these questions in the feature requests so that it is not misunderstood as not understanding the preferences that do already exist

Photo Mechanic is very much a cross-platform application and the solution we have now works well for both platforms.  We could certainly roll our own cross-platform update mechanism that 'phones-home' but some people really don't like when an application does that.

We don't often release new final versions, and betas won't show up in the update mechanism anyway.  Really no need to have the updates check more often than a week.  And if you're having problems with Photo Mechanic that you think is a bug, please report it.  If we can reproduce a problem, I can fix it.

We just forward our feedback and suggestions and any bugs and issues and comments from photographers and see what you guys there think.

To the credit of you and the developers many features tweaks and issues we have passed to Bob over the years have been added, fixed, tweaked or explained.. so we always like to spend the time sending you anything that may be of use.

Thank you for explaining the reason behind doing it this way, and for now we will reduce the frequency in the prefs.

Just a side note: we cant get live ingest working on the latest version its not seeing any updates in the watch folder hmm.. but i havent searched the forums yet for that so there maybe a thread already.

Thanks for being so quick in replying to issues the great customer service we get is one reason why we recommend CameraBits over its rivals.

If you're trying to Live Ingest from RAW files, it won't work.  Live Ingest currently only works with JPEGs.
