Is it possible to open and view the files on the card, Tag the ones you want, and just inget them?

Yes, but we don't recommend ever editing photos on your card until after you have downloaded them.  They're your only copy when they only exist on your card!

Are you sure you'd want to do this; accessing files on your card directly will be pretty slow, hampering the selection process, wouldn't it?
