My (still open :-) wish- and featurelist
« on: May 09, 2010, 02:13:06 AM »
Hi Kirk,

after working with Photo Mechanic for over two years now I must say: I don't know how it was possible to work without PM before. It is the best program and the best $150 I spend in the last years.

Nevertheless, today I'd like to write some ("still") missing features which would be make working still faster and more comfortable:

1) the possibility to make a "save and next" within the IPTC dialog on a MacBook Pro with a German keyboard (already mentioned a couple of month ago)

2) to have an upload button within the IPTC dialog

3) to select several photos and make an IPTC description in the dialog and have an "apply to all selected images" button. The IPTC stationary pad if really good for "static" descriptions but not comfortable when writing captions in hurry situations. Here is the "Lightroom" approach much better, faster and comfortable: select images -> describing them -> save with applying to all selected images

4) a shortcut to "extract JPEGs from RAW"

5) a configurable default behaviour for "extract JPEGs from RAW" within the preferences pane ("save to path" or "origin folder")

6) the ability to sync metadata between files (especially between JPEG and RAW). It happens that I got described JPEGs from a colleague where I have the RAW files. It would be nice to have a feature that allows to transfer the metadata (IPTC) from the JPG to the RAW file or vice versa.

7) ftp upload dialog: to have a button "move to top" the current selected files

7a) better (as 7) would be a special thumbview of the uploads - so that the user could arrage the image by the thumbnails like the arrangemets

(8) the ability to create code replacements "on the fly". For example: when entering text it should be possible to select part of the text and create a shortcut in terms of a code replacement based on the selection. Perhaps it would be possible to define a "general" code replacement file within the corresponding dislog where all these kind of replacements would be stored in.

9) when working with hierachical keyword from Lightroom to have the ability (LR keyword) which would only insert the leafs but not the entire path

10) get crop from the previous image. When shooting series of photos often they have the same crop. So it would be great to have a feature to apply the same crop as from the previous image

Lars,

3) to select several photos and make an IPTC description in the dialog and have an "apply to all selected images" button. That's what the 'Apply Stationery Pad' button in the IPTC Info dialog does.  It makes the IPTC Info's contents into a quick IPTC Stationery Pad and writes it to the selected photos.

6) the ability to sync metadata between files (especially between JPEG and RAW). It happens that I got described JPEGs from a colleague where I have the RAW files. It would be nice to have a feature that allows to transfer the metadata (IPTC) from the JPG to the RAW file or vice versa.

That's what the 'Update IPTC/XMP...' command on the Tools menu does.

9) when working with hierachical keyword from Lightroom to have the ability (LR keyword) which would only insert the leafs but not the entire path

Use the 'Add keyword' button instead of double-clicking on the keyword.  Only the last keyword will be added to the collection.

The rest of your requests will be considered.

Not really - this buttons copies the IPTC stationary info (already written there) into the selected files, only. But I really would like to do this on the fly. E.g. to select several thumbs, press "I" to describe the first photo and apply my current inputs to all other selected (without using the stationary pad).

Oh, that's great. I haven't noticed the function until now.  ::)

I guess I have described "my wish" in a wrong way. Let's try it again  ;D

I want to use LR for my hierarchical keywording. But when I now load the image(s) in PM again, it will show all keywords in the IPTC keyword field. This is because LR stores each node of all hierarchical keywords as a separate one. Here it would be nice to show the leaf of the LR hierarchical keywords, only - but not all.

That would be really awesome!

BTW: today I noticed a "new" problem (never discovered before):
1. describing the photos with PM
2. import them into LR
3. make some adjustments (color, exposure etc.)
4. save the metadata in LR
5. go back into PM and change the caption in PM
6. re-import the photo in LR (to reload the metadata changes done in PM)

Problem: all previously adjustments made with LR are lost...

Is this a new behavior? Because I could swear that this didn't happen in earlier versions....

Thanks,
Lars

We won't ever implement a feature like this.  If we did so (filter out parts of the data) and you re-saved the IPTC data, the filtered data would be lost.  Not good!

Please try the 4.6.4 beta version available in the Announcements section of the forums.  Let me know if the problem persists or not.
