I didn't find what variable is convenient to know in PM, if a tif photo is with 8 or 16 bits.

I don't think there actually is a variable describing bit depth (yet). You could make a feature request for it. It will have my vote as I can see the benefit of having it. I think (hope) it is easy to implement as well so…
