New Macbook Pro...swap or reinstall?
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:01:40 PM »
Hello,
I just got a new Macbook Pro and I was wondering the best way to keep Photo Mechanic.

Should I reinstall (download from the website and use my code/name) or copy over from my existing Macbook Pro? I am worried because I haven't updated in a while and don't want to be charged extra fees for a newer version.

Also, how do I keep all the information, palates I have saved in the IPTC fields?

Thanks in advance.

What version of PM are you currently running?  What OS version is your new computer running?

Kirk,
I currently have Photo Mechanic 4.5.4.

And I'll be running Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard.

Thanks in advance!

You'll need an upgrade to version 4.6.4 since anything earlier than 4.6.3 is not compatible with Snow Leopard.  Once you've upgraded your Photo Mechanic on your old system, you can export its preferences by using the 'Export' button in the Preferences dialog on your old system and then when you get your new system you can import the file from your old system to your new one by clicking on the 'Import' button in the Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog on your new system.

All settings should be preserved.

Kirk,
You've been a great help. Another reason why I love you guys over at Camera Bits.

One last question. Can I "export" (from my old 4.5.4 Photo Mechanic) and when I get my new MBP just buy a new copy of PM and then "import" those settings? Or do I need to upgrade/buy before I export?

I ask is because my current version of PM is from my old college employer (who didn't mind if I kept it on my personal computer). But I'd like to buy my own copy now. Start fresh with my own license.

Thanks for everything!
