Ingest of selected photos only
« on: September 15, 2010, 02:24:23 PM »
Hello,

I'd like to suggest to add a possibility to ingest only the selected photos instead of either a disk or a folder.

Often I shoot more than one theme in a day, e.g. an event followed by some landscape pictures. In Photo mechanic, when I ingest pictures, I make extensive use of the variables for file (re)naming. This causes problems in case only entire disks/folders can be ingested as it doesn't allow for differentiation in file naming.

Thanks!

This is an often-requested feature that we call "Ingest from Selection" which has not been implemented yet.  I do not have any guidance on when the feature will be implemented.

Hi, Kirk,
I also think that would be a great new feature!
Hope to see it soon.

Luiz, Until this feature gets implemented you can use the very much existing feature to select your photos in camera during/after your shoot with the protect photos option and only ingest the protected photos during ingest. This way you get only your selected photos downloaded.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

All camera's are slightly different but almost all cameras have this feature.
Nikons usually have a button with a key on them.
Once locked a key will appear with a key symbol in the corner.
For other camera's, check your manual...

It's usually pro level cameras (mainly series marked with only one digit like Nikon D1-D3 and Canon's 1D) usually there is a key button to protect photos directly with a single press of a button.

For lower level cameras it is usually a function accessible from the menu. Check it in your manual.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.

Thanks, guys.
As you said, on my 7D it is a function accessible from the menu.

This would be very much top of my list too.

Only realised yesterday that this was a limitation, and personally frustrating.
Cheers,

Dougie.

Another vote for this.  It was one thing that I often did with previous ingest software.  I often use one card for several shoots.

Thanks!

This single feature is why I have stayed with Breezebrowser DownloaderPro. Add this feature to PM and you've got a real winner. If multiple jobs are on a single card (which happens more often now with big roomy inexpensive 16 or 32 Gb cards) You don't want to sit through what can be 15 minutes or longer of download just to find 50 files. BB lists all files on the card with camera identifier, file type (.cr2, jpeg etc) date, time (hour, minute, second) and file size. You just select the files you need. PM Ingest as it exist today was probably fine when all we had were 1Gb cards. Have you timed a full 32Gb card download time recently?

I think this thread is in need of a bump, as this is a feature that's well overdue.

I shoot a lot of sports and prefer RAW, so filling a 16GB card doesn't take much. I could go through all the images on the back of my camera's LCD screen and protect my selected shots but that isn't efficient, drains battery power, and I'd probably bypass key moments that I otherwise wouldn't on the big screen.

Going through a first pass, making selects and then having an option to ingesting only selects is a workflow that makes sense for people who fill up cards fast but don't want to spend 30 or 40 or 60 minutes ingesting the whole thing.

Please seriously consider this - thanks!

We have.  Cataloging has a higher priority and since one can get most of the functionality by selecting the photos and using the Copy/Move command (with the exception of unmounting and a secondary destination) it hasn't been implemented.

I would also like to see this option available in the ingest section

I believe that Image Capture from Apple finally added this feature a while ago, and, although many of the features can be used by copy, selective ingest would be on my wish list.
