request general tips on performance increase

I'm running PM4.4XX on my mac G5 with 2GB of ram. My typical edit session is about 600 raw+jpgs from a football or baseball game. I like to use the arrow keys to move from image to image in the preview mode (so that the image is larger).

I find that I often have to wait several seconds for the image cache to catch up to my fingers attempting to move from image to image.

Is there anything I should do settings-wise to improve the response ?

I typically have PS CS2 open at the same time and sometimes a browser.

HD has 26 GB avail
Ram = 1.5 GB
2 GHz Dual Processor G5

Seems to thrash a lot on the HD when I launch PM ...

What are the settings in the Caching tab of the Preferences dialog in PM?  Also, how many megapixels are your images, and what file formats are you viewing?  (JPEG, TIFF, CR2, NEF, etc.)

I use a canon 1DMKII-N and edit the CR2 and JPG files it produces. I most often shoot in RAW+JPG mode, so both files are present in my edit folder. There are typically 500-600 (x2) images being edited.

The cache settings are:

- Disk = 1024 MB
- Reserve = 100 MB
- Mem = 64 MB

I just changed the Disk from 512 to 1024 last night. Have not noticed much improvement.

I just changed the Disk from 512 to 1024 last night. Have not noticed much improvement.

Set the cache to empty on quit.
Set the Memory cache to 256 MB.

That should improve things a bit, but basically no program can whip through images as fast as one can press keys.  If you pause at a photo for a second or two, the program should be able to keep up.  If you use the thumbnail gallery to jump around, then PM will need to start caching again at the new location.
