CameraBits suggestions for ITPC tagging
« on: November 09, 2011, 05:46:27 PM »
With Cataloging under development, I'd love to see some thoughts/blog posts/contemplated best practices from CameraBits for ITPC tagging images now, in  anticipation of the future release of cataloging software.   It need not be complete, and it can be full of disclaimers, but, directionally, anyway, the folks at CameraBits know a whole lot of information that I might be able to use today, that might be useful when the catalog functionality is released.

Basically put in as much metadata that seems prudent to your based on your available time.  Think about how you might find images and enter data that makes sense to you.  Also, keep in mind that PM+Catalog will have organizing features that will allow you to layout your photos how you want them so that they're easier to access directly (from a tree like structure) rather than by performing searches.

Kirk,
Two comments/questions:
1- you mean by metadata, keywords, captions and the like?
2- when you mention a tree like structure, you mean not the actual file tree structure?
Also, when you say "rather than by performing searches", it seems that it will be a whole lot different than we are used to in PM now. There will probably be a "learning curve"...
TIA

Yes.  It is easier to say metadata rather than things like GPS coordinates, Captions, Keywords, Photographers, Copyrights, etc.)

You'll still have the Favorites and the Navigator to use if you wish.  The Organizer will allow you to make your own virtual file tree, one that makes sense for you and one that allows a picture to be found in more than one place.  For instance, lets say you create some places like "Portraits" or "Children", you could have a photo in both places if the photo was a portrait and had children in it.  The filesystem only allows a photo to exist in one place (unless you use aliases or shortcuts which are bothersome to manage.)
