Am I using code replacement right?

Hi, All my captions are fully written in Excel, from an entry list of competitors

The first column is the code: DD39

The second column is the text: #1 Bill Daily, Plumbers Special 450 GTO

I type \DD39\ and the text changes to the text in column 2 but it is surrounded by quotation marks, i.e. it comes in as in

"#1 Bill Daily, Plumbers Special 450 GTO"

Any idea when I am doing wrong?

Is there a way to not have to type the two backslash? because I am not using the code in a sentence like in the example in the user manual.

Unless I have the actual file, I can't tell for sure.  PM certainly doesn't add quotation marks on its own.

No.  The delimiter characters are not optional and both one at the start and one at the end are necessary.
