Sharpening settings in PM
« on: October 25, 2011, 06:12:37 AM »
Currently running PM 4.6.2.1 on Mac 10.5.8 and about to upgrade to Lion and the newest PM.

Can you add adjustability to the default sharpening settings in PM?

I have search the older posts and found this:

In the latest version of PM, how much sharpening is applied when you check the sharping box in the save as or upload photos dialog boxes. what is it's photoshop equivalent?  Also is there any difference between the sharping in the save as dialog box and the upload photos dialog box.

The settings are the same everywhere.

The settings are whole numbers and aren't exactly the same as Photoshop's since it is our own sharpening algorithm.  Internally, the radius is 1, the amount is 200, and the threshold is 2.

We may add adjustibility at some point.

We're planning to add this capability to the next major version of PM.

Has the planned sharpening adjustment been added to the latest version of PM? If yes, how do I do it? Thanks

Kirk,
This internal setting would be equivalent to what in terms of Canon`s software - DPP (Strength, Fineness and Threshold)?
TIA

Possibly, but I don't know because we don't use DPP.  It is more analogous to Photoshop's Amount, Radius, and Threshold in Unsharp Mask.

Will you also be making the sharpening so that it only affects the luminosity as this is the better sharpening method as it prevents colour shifts?

Thanks for your quick reply, Kirk.
Nowadays I use DPP for minor adjustments, sharpening and conversion, but it would be interesting to count on PM for shapening.

It already sharpens only luminance.  The process goes like this:

RGB->YCC
Sharpen Y channel (luminance data)
YCC->RGB

Only luminance data is sharpened.

This is listed in the 13764 build, "added support for sharpness level setting" which got my hopes up that this feature had been implemented.
But I can't see this in the new build.
Have I misunderstood what "added support for sharpness level setting" means? If not, please can you point me to the correct dialogue?
Thanks :)

Yes, you have misunderstood.  Here is what the announcement said:

√ Olympus maker note parsing enhancements:
   fixed handling of focus mode
   added support for flash mode
   added support for flash exposure compensation
   added support for white balance
   added support for sharpness level setting

We added support for the extraction of the sharpness level setting in Olympus photos into variables in Photo Mechanic.  It does not mean that we added a UI for controlling the sharpness parameters in various dialogs like Save As.
