I am running Photo Mechanic version 4.6.8 and I run Mac OS X 10.7.3 on my Intel-based Mac.

I am applying batch structured keywords from controlledvocabulary.com

I can apply my keywords in Photo Mechanic, then import those photos into Aperture and they will appear in both the "General" and "IPTC" keyword fields. This is great.

But if I apply keywords to a photo or photos in Photo Mechanic and then close out of the Structured Keyword Panel and wish to view them later, I cannot seem to locate them anywhere. I will hover over a photo and click on the "i" and nothing appears within the keywords field. Additionally, if I reopen the Structured Keyword Panel, it also is empty.

How do I view what should be existing keywords so that I do not have to start over or do all my key wording all at once?

I hope I am being clear and thanks for the help!

Given what you've said, I don't see how this is possible.  The Keywords field should contain your structured keywords.  You're not using the Classic IPTC dialogs, are you?  Does your IPTC dialog show the image in the upper right area of the window?

I am using the "i" shortcut, the same as clicking on the i when hovering over a thumbnail.

  • In image one you can see that I apply the keywords using the floating structured keywords panel. Then hit "apply collection to selected".

  • In image two you can see how I am accessing the metadata information, clicking the "i" on the bottom left.

  • In image three you can see that the keywords field is empty. My problem.

  • In image four you can see that when I import them into Aperture that they are in "keywords" under the IPTC Core metadata panel

  • In image five you can see that the keywords are also visible in Aperture under "keywords" under the General metadata panel.

  • In the final image, which is completely irrelevant, is a kitten.

Cute kitten. ;)

Can you post a sample image that has your keywords applied to it that don't show up in the Keywords field?

Here you go!

I will also note that when I save as a JPEG the keywords are not preserved but star ratings are in Aperture.

There is a link to my public Dropbox. The file is IMG_0002.CR2.

Matthew,

I'll need the corresponding XMP sidecar file too.

OK, thanks.  Your keywords show up fine in my Photo Mechanic.  Your settings must just be a bit off.  Open up the Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog.  Go to the IPTC/XMP section.  In the When reading area on the left side make sure you read XMP Sidecar files first, Embedded XMP second, and Embedded IPTC third.

That should do it.

Kirk,

Thank you! This worked beautifully. My next question is if the way I am applying (writing) metadata in keywords is within best practices.

My workflow looks like this:

Import with PM > Apply keywords and copyright metadata with PM > Import files in Aperture > Organize/Edit with Aperture > Deliver product to client through PhotoShelter/Upload to my micro stock library through Photoshelter

I have attached my IPTC/XMP settings. Not sure if I should be updating IPTC, IPTC4XMP or just using an XMP sidecar. Not too sure what the differences are and how to clearly navigate that.

Thank you again so much Kirk, you have been a great help.

Your settings look fine.  The only thing I would change is the checkbox "Add IPTC-NAA Resource when embedding IPTC" since it is entirely unnecessary.
