RAW / DNG rendering issue
« on: June 05, 2012, 06:05:24 AM »
Running 4.6.8 on 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on intel mac, and we noticed that some DNG files created using DNG Converter 7.1 are showing incorrectly rendered like they're out of focus. We thought it was the image to start with and started rejecting photos, but after a few we thought it strange. The images are from a 5D mkIII, and given we're still using Lightroom 3 we needed to convert to DNG so that the import will work.

We reverted back to the original RAW files and PM was able to render them correctly, but putting the DNG and RAW side by side you could see the difference. The DNG shows fine using Finder/Preview.

We're working around it by converting to DNG after the 'cut', and this will go away if adobe patch LR3 to handling the RAW format - I know LR4 works fine with the mkIII but there's a training issue with the upgrade which means a change to our process/workflow.

Is this a problem with PM's handling of DNG files?

No, more likely the images are very high resolution after the DNG conversion (the embedded JPEG previews are used for display) and PM is failing to allocate an image buffer large enough for the preview.  PM 4.6.9 beta 4 has changes to address this issue.  See the Announcements section for more info on the beta.

Setting your Memory Cache smaller should also help previews succeed more often.

Ah, thank you, we'll make the adjustment and see what happens.
Many thanks
