PM5 and Mountain Lion - cannot delete images
« on: August 21, 2012, 09:49:11 AM »
PM5, OSX Mountain Lion, Intel MacPro early 2008.

I cannot delete images using the PM5 Delete Photos command.

Sometimes nothing happens at all.  Sometimes, after a long delay, the selected image thumbnail disappears, leaving a blank frame.  If I close PM5 and reopen, the offending image is right back there again.

The same happens if I try to delete multiple images.

On my August 2012 MacBook Air, also Mountain Lion, deletion works properly.

Any help would be appreciated.

These issues should be solved in the next build.

If after getting the next build you are still having difficulties, please let me know.

Thanks for the quick response.  What is the timing of the next build?

Andrew,

Thanks for the quick response.  What is the timing of the next build?

We're working on a release for today.

Unfortunately, the latest version which I downloaded today has not improved the problem at all.  It remains as in my original post.

Just to clarify, this problem arises whether I try to delete individual images or a group of images.  What seems to happen is that after a delay the thumbnail disappears, leaving a grey frame.  I then close PM5 and reopen it, and the thumbnail returns and the image can be opened as normal.

OK, then you'll have to tell me more about the images in question.  On what kind of device are they stored?  How long is this delay?
If you force a rescan do the images reappear?

Can you post a screenshot of what your contact sheet looks like after the delete?  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your JPEG format screenshot.

Thanks,

Kirk, thanks, the images are stored on my MacPro on an internal hard drive.  PM5 is on my boot drive.

Deletion of the thumbnail is quicker than I thought, it disappears when I move the cursor over the thumbnail.

Rescan does not restore the thumbnail.  Closing PM5 and reopening it does restore the thumbnail and the main image.

Here is a screenshot of the "placeholder" left after deletion of the image.

Andrew,

You're able to do other things with these files, (like renaming, tagging, rating, etc.), right?

If you open a Finder window off to the side that shows a file you're moving to the Trash, does it disappear for a moment and then return?

Kirk, everything else works fine, renaming, tagging, rating etc.  I first noticed the problem when I tagged a lot of images for deletion, selected them and deleted them.  They eventually disappeared from the contact sheet, but reappeared on reopening PM5.

But the problem exists with tagged and untagged, single image and multiple images.

When I delete from PM5 there is no movement at all on the image in the Finder, and it can still be opened and edited via the Finder.

The strange thing is that PM5 works correctly on my August 2011 MacBook Air, also on Mountain Lion.

Andrew,

OK, well there are two choices: I make a logging version which you'll run and give me back the logs until we figure out what is going on, or switch your preference to delete instead of moving to Trash.

Let me know what you want to do.

Kirk,

I am happy to try a logging version, because I want to keep the ability to use Trash.

But I will need detailed instructions, as I am operating at the limits of my technical abilities!

I am in the UK, so there is a time lag.

Kirk, I think there is a problem with permissions which is causing problems with my Trash folder, nothing to do with PM5.  Please do not do any more work on my problem until I have tested this.

I will report back later.

Kirk

This was definitely a permissions issue in OSX, not a PM5 point.  I am sure you are glad to hear this.

It is apparently not an unusual problem.  There are various solutions and work rounds, one of which seems to work for me.
