Feature request - reverse geocoding
« on: October 02, 2012, 09:45:51 AM »
I know this was requested a couple of years ago and was mentioned it wouldn't be implemented in PM 4.6. But I would like to add this request for a newer version of PM. Geotagging via PM works great, the only reason I have to use another software is for the reverse geocoding. And I am using geotags a lot :)

Thanks,

Bas

By "reverse geocoding" you mean to display the geolocation data stored in photos on a map? I think it would be a great idea.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

Reverse geocoding means AFAIK putting location data as place, state and country in the IPTC.

Reverse geocoding means AFAIK putting location data as place, state and country in the IPTC.

I'm trying to imagine the enormous database it would require to add place, state and country based upon map coordinates.  It depends upon how local you want place information I guess. State and country might be manageable, but place would require huge amounts of data. Maybe my definition of "place" is different than yours.  Place for me is "My house" or "My neighbors house" and they are fractions of a minute apart geographically.  What software are you using now that has such a database?

As far as displaying a map for images that have geocoding as szurkebarat mentions, Photo Mechanic already does that.  Just right click on an image and select Show Map and PM displays the location of the image.

Wow!  Would this return a street address based upon map coordinates?  As a non programer, that seems pretty complicated and amazing to me.  Could it work both ways?  If I enter a street address, city, state, and country could this add geocoding coordinates to my images?  But now that I think about it, if I enter a street address into Google Earth, the program takes me to the map location so that can work.  It's not a priority for me, but it would be a neat feature in PM.  But PLEASE, get us the catalog first.  I'm delaying upgrading my current catalog program waiting for Camera Bits app.

Reverse geotagging works well with the free Geosetter (http://www.geosetter.de/en/) program. It uses the (also free) geonames database (http://www.geonames.org/).

Given position information (gpx file etc..) it can write the data into jpg or raw (at least into my NEFs) just like PM, and then retrieve the country/state-province:location/sub-location and write it into the IPTC.

So PM should be able to do the same....

Thanks for the info. I used Geosetter before using PM to geotag images.  Matched GPS track data by time to image time.  I still have it installed but haven't updated for a long time.  I need to try it again with the geonames database.

I an new to Photo mechanic and it has solved 95% of my initial ingestion needs which is great as it will greatly simplify my work flow.  tow things that are missing for me are recently used keywords to enable quick selection and reverse geocoding.  I can do reverse geocoding in IMatch which is my dam application but having this in Photo mechanic would greatly simplify my workflow.
