RAW files preview at incorrect resoultion
« on: December 05, 2012, 03:41:00 AM »
I'm running PM Version 4.6.7 on OSX 10.6.8.

When I preview certain RAW (CR2) files their resolution shows up at much lower than it was shot.  I can see the files at correct res when I view them in Finder (etc) but they show up smaller within PM, making it especially difficult to view at 100% (it actually shrinks the image in some cases).

By the way, I'm certain that:
• At least some files shot on a 30D are having that problem
• Most - if not all - files shot on a 5DmkII are not having that problem

Thanks in advance!
-Eddie

Hi Eddie!

Not all RAW's from "older" Canons contain the full size JPG as preview.
Go to the preferences of PM, choose the RAW section and enable the RAW rendering.

This will show you the full size image in preview.

After 5 years of absence I restarted the photography.

Now, Sven, with a newer camera (like the 7D, for instance) is it always better to use the embedded jpeg preview or render raw for preview?
TIA,

Stick with the embedded previews unless you want your previewing experience to get a lot slower.  Rendering RAW files is very slow.

Thanks, Sven.  Really appreciate it.

However...

I'm not having success with that.  I do have RAW Rendering enabled - even restarted PM - but the preview shows up at 1728 x 1152 rather than the actual (confirmed) size of 3504 x 2336.  When I zoom 'in' to 100% it actually gets smaller because it's so low res.

Am I missing something?

Eddie,
I also have a CR2 from a 30D here.
Turning off RAW rendering shows the image at 1728x1152 pixels.
Enabling RAW rendering gives the size of 3504x2336 pixels.

You can also press "Q" to swap between the JPG and the rendered RAW.

If you use the Preview application that comes with your Mac, can it render the image at full size?  If not, then Photo Mechanic won't be able to render it full size either.

Sven, I'm attaching 2 screen shots.  They are...

• Preview (on Mac) in the foreground showing the images at 100% with PhotoMechanic in the background - also at 100%.  Notice the Res.  And it is exactly the same file.

• My settings as they are currently enabled.

...stop the presses. I just now tried the 'Q' button.  It worked.  What's odd is "Enable RAW Rendering" has to be checked AND 'Q' has to be pressed.  Doing only one of those two things doesn't work.

Kirk - it does render at full size.  Read my answer to Sven and it looks like we're all set.  Strange, but it works.

Thanks, guys!

Eddie,

If you change those popup menus to always render the RAW, you won't have to press the 'Q' key, but overall Photo Mechanic will slow to a crawl.  I suggest keeping things the way they are, but press Q when you need to judge sharpness.  Not all photos are keepers and many can be evaluated from the preview.
