MacBook Air + PM ??
« on: August 19, 2014, 06:05:38 AM »
Hello everybody,

I'm a totally ignorant about Mac, because I always used PC.
Now I need a new laptop, so I'm thinking in buy my first Macbook.

The question is, can I run PM, plus Photoshop CC 2014 (Camera Raw) in a MacBook Air ??

The price difference from a MBP and a MBA is huge so I haven't options.

Other jobs done in this computer could be: Office (word-excel), Dreamweaver (for website editing) and Photoshop (full editor).

Sounds good!! Many people suggested me "no" without having experience doing it.
Just because is not a Pro, doesn't mean you can't work like a pro.
MBA is really needed for me, since I move from race tracks to another and that lightweight makes the difference!
Even my Pelican will have a breath because todays I have all the equipment too tight.
Thanks!

It's difficult getting a maxed out MBA here.
The only option I have is MBA 4GB SSD128GB.
Not big enough, right?

No problem with PM. You may have a problem with CS5 and LR5 though.

My second Mac after I switched was a MBA with 1.6 GHz C2D processor. LR was a bit slower on the MBA than on a MBP with a twice faster processor (I don't really use PS), but PM was as fast as on any other computer - actually I found it to run smoother on my Macs than on any Windows machine.

You may come short of the 4GB RAM and 128 SSD. If you can afford it, the bigger processor, bigger RAM and larger SSD would add a lot.

I too had 128 GB SSD and I was always on the edge and I had to keep doing cleanup to make space. Now I have a 256 GB SSD in my MBP and even this fills up way faster than I would prefer. However it is up to your needs and possibilities.
I use RAW files and some times (not always) I make 50-100 GB a day that means it could be tight to keep a day's work on a 128GB and it's much easier with the 256GB. I daily backup them to an external hard drive but this takes an extra hard drive to pack with the computer (and another one for redundant backup) and it adds extra time to the workflow to back up every day to make room for the new photos.

I think especially with disk space the bigger is always the better.

I've been considering to buy an extra 64-128GB USB stick in a small size, but the more compact size ones are slow (USB2) and it would take longer to use them as extra storage.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

Thanks for the replies!
I can't get the maxed out version, so I'm about to decline make the change to Mac and will look for an ultrabook option.
The market here is so small that we don't have enough options.
My images are 8MP, jpg from my Canon 1D2N, so typically a race weekend boast around 3000 images.
I have Photoshop CC 2014 but I never use it. Only Adobe Camera Raw and just for crop and corrections.
Today I have a Dell Latitude D830 with 4GM, 1TB HDD and it have Core 2 Duo. I presume this new computer (MBA or ultrabook) should outperform it.
The ultrabook which comes in best price is a Sony Vaio Pro 13 with 8GB RAM and 128SSD.
Thanks again!
