Sony ARW images
« on: September 21, 2021, 03:52:19 PM »
Hello
Please can you tell me how to display thumbnails of Sony ARW files when I look into a folder. I can see the .CR2 images of Canon but the Sony ARW images just have an ARW icon visible and not the content of the image .

Thank you
Kevin

Could you tell me what version and build of Photo Mechanic you're running?

Kevin,

Photo Mechanic Version 6.0, build 6026 (6de4c1a)

That's odd.  Unless the ARW files don't have embedded previews, you should be seeing thumbnails when you browse them.  Are they from a very old Sony camera?  What model produced the ARW files?

Hi Kirk
I think I've sorted what I was doing wrong - seems to be fine now. Thanks for your help and sorry for bothering you.

Could you tell me what you did to solve the issue, in case it comes up again for someone else?  It could help save a significant amount of time.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Hi Kirk
Thanks. Actually I don't think it's corrected itself after all. I attach screenshot of what my issue is. I have imported my images and renamed them. As you see, some of the images the subject is displayed, whilst in others I see only the title underneath a blank image with the letters 'ARW' where an image thumbnail should be.

Kevin,

What window is that?  It's not a window that's directly a part of Photo Mechanic.

Are you embedding XMP into your ARW files?  Some software is incompatible with embedded metadata in RAW files.  You'll have to use XMP sidecar files instead.  You can control this in the IPTC/XMP section of the Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog.  If you go to the snapshot button (has a small lightning bolt on it) and choose the "Adobe" setting, you'll now be creating XMP sidecar files.

To fix any of your affected images, select them in Photo Mechanic and choose the "Revert TIFF-based RAW to Original" command on the Tools menu.  Be sure to have the "Backup XMP to XMP sidecar files or re-add to DNGs" checkbox checked.  When that operation completes, the embedded metadata will be now in XMP sidecar files (with the same base name as the images) and the image files will be returned to their original state.

HTH,

-Kirk

Please click the open button shown in your screenshot so that the folder opens as a contact sheet and then send a screenshot of what you see after that.
