Email image makes background black on Mac Snow Leopard
« on: June 12, 2010, 03:15:11 PM »
I am using PM 4.6.4. on Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on a MacBook Pro. Now when I use "Send Photos by Email", the image background in Mac Mail now turns black. I have not changed any settings on Mail that I know of and haven't changed anything on PM. Has anyone seen anything like this and how do I get rid of it? I can't figure out how to change the background on the mail once it's entered.

Thanks, David.

While I have never heard of this before, I can tell you that the AppleScript that Photo Mechanic uses to control the Mail.app does not set or change colors.

Just on a lark, I used the "Make Plain Text" menu item in Mail, and the black background went away. Strange. I've never seen this before. I'll have to see if there is some template for Rich Text for Mail. Strange.

Thanks, Kirk. BTW, enjoyed hearing your interview on Nikonians Image Doctors.

Just so you see what I'm talking about, attached is what happens when I send to email with Apple Mail. The first image is what I see when I send to Mail. The text is invisible because it's black on black. The second image is the mail when I change the font color to yellow and background color to grey. What I note is that is the text and the image is inside of some kind of box that is not part of the background. I have never seen this behavior before. Strange.

My guess is that it is related to this http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20007447-263.html?tag=mncol;title  (I do have an open ticket in apples developer bug reports)

Nice catch on that one, Sam. That explains why invoking "Make Plain Text" "fixes" the problem. Once again, CameraBits is absolved ;-) David

Please, if you have ADC accout, DO file an error report with Apple. Mentioning that script invoked messages should honour the Mail.app preferences toggle on creating new messages as plain text. IMO when there is a toggle that explicitly tells Mail.app to create plain text emails, it should work no matter the way the message had been created. One client even ahad a problem saving the photos from the email, as irrespective of my settings to send new messages as plain text, script created messages are sent as HTML. Which as  a bug in my opinion. Either there should be a way of choosing the methond in the applescript or it shouldd hhonour thr perferences flag;. hanks

Did you upgrade to Safari 5?  It appears to be the cause of the problem.

A workaround was described above.  Make the email Plain Text and the black background disappears.  You won't be able to automatically send emails if you want to use this workaround.

Hello everyone,

Apple seems to be quite aware of the problem:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3385

There is also a fairly long thread about this issue on Apple's Support Forums:

http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11634813

I still have found no reliable method to get the black background to go away via AppleScript.

Hopefully Apple will provide a fix since it affects all apps that use AppleScript to tell Mail to create a message with attachments, including Apple's own applications.
