Star rating PEF in Photo Mechanic
« on: September 18, 2012, 03:01:19 PM »
Hello,

I've just downloaded Photo Mechanic, which came highly recommended for its speed. Photo Mechanic is indeed way ahead of any other software when it comes to flipping through raw images.

I plan to make a pretty heavy use of the rating - stars and colors - feature. It works fine with jpeg, but not with raw. When clicking on a star to rate a picture, stars show in dark grey. As soon as the mouse button is released, they disappear. Clicking on colors won't have any effect. It is also not possible to check the "select" boxes with raw files.

The raw files I work with are in pef format, shot with a Pentax K-5. Photo Mechanic does generate an XMP file for every pef photo I tried to rate.

Is there some way to make the rating feature work ?

Thank you already,
Orang

Hello Kirk,

Sorry about that, here is the info:

I am running Photo Mechanic version 5.0, build 13217 (68ec133) on Windows 7x32 (on a PC).

Here is a screenshot made while clicking on the third star (somewhat the arrow doesn't show).
The XMP files displayed are results of previous attempts. Yet, as you can see, IMGP4879.PEF does not have a rating.

Here is a screenshot made after releasing the left mouse button: the stars have disappeared on IMGP4087.PEF.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Orang

I have the same behaviour when the sub-directory containing the photos is also opened in the browser  of Capture NX2 (photo editing software for Nikon NEF files). As soon as I select another picture in PM, the star/color rating disappears from the previous one. To avoid that, I close the sub_directory in CNX2 (or choose to display another one).
This problem happens with Windows, I am not using a Mac.

Hi Frédéric,

Thanks for sharing this tip on a very similar problem. Unfortunately, it does not apply in this very case. The folder is not even open in Windows Explorer. I had faststone running when I made the screenshot, but it happens even without faststone running. Picasa or any other phot-editing softawere are not running in the background either.

Can I get you to upload one of your photos to our server?  Please click on my name to the left of this message, then click on the 'personal message' link.  I will respond with upload instructions.

Thanks,

Hello Kirk,

Thank you for your quick reply and these good news.

Do you have an estimate release date for the next build ?

It seems strange that I am the only user affected.

Soon.  If not by the end of this week, then certainly next week.

The problem only affects Pentax PEF files.  There aren't a huge number of Pentax shooters out there in comparison to Canon and Nikon shooters.  (At least not that also use Photo Mechanic.)

Hi,

Seems like you work 24/7!

I understand that PM is used mainly by professional photographers who favor Nikon and Canon, but after testing PM's superior speed, I don't see how anyone would like to use another software. I'll spread the word among Pentax users!

I'll be looking forward for this update.
