EXIF issue
« on: April 19, 2013, 11:42:58 AM »
Good morning,

I've the following problem:
- I ingest RAW/CR2 images with PM applying IPTC (specifically "Description/Caption"), I edit the image in PS in original size, PSD.
- If I resize the same PSD image and save as JPG from PS, EXIF field "Image Description" is same as the above specified (i.e. PM's "Description/Caption").
- If I simply save/resize as JPG the same PSD image using PM, I loose the EXIF info "Image Description" (but still the PM's "Description/Caption" is there).

Does anybody know why and how I could possibly avoid this problem? (i.e. get the original EXIF field directly from "save as" in PM).

Thanks,

Just a quick question, but have you enabled "preserve exif information when possible" in the save as dialogue?

Hmm, ok. Can you post two sample images, one with the info and one without? The image need only be very small; it's the metadata I'm after  ;)

Had a look at the files, and indeed somehow PM has omitted some of the EXIF fields (Image Description and Copyright). I'm not sure what the reason behind this is, but hopefully Kirk or Dennis can help us out here.

The JPEG module in PM doesn't duplicate fields that exist in IPTC/XMP including "image description" and "copyright" and "artist".  We could add these but the problem is that Exif is a very rigid format and editing these fields "in place" (after doing a save as JPEG) is problematic if the length of the fields increase.  There shouldn't be any problem with the fields being missing from Exif because they really belong in the IPTC/XMP anyway and any decent software will find them there.

HTH.

Thanks Dennis,

I've experienced the problem you are talking about (increasing filed's length) but still I would appreciate a behave like PS. Apparently my web developer has problem in extracting fields from IPTC/XMP and not form EXIF. I am not a developer myself so I've hard times in convincing them to fish the infos from IPTC/XMP instead...

ExifTool is free and runs on just about anything.  Have your web developer use it to extract metadata.
