Save Photo As... Functionality
« on: March 02, 2007, 12:32:28 PM »
I am using version 4.4.3.2 on Win XP.

I am having to size photos and create thumbnails for a client's website.  I'm starting with images that are 580 x 392 pixels.  They want the thumbnails to be 105 x 70.  Unfortunately, a straight resize from 580 x 392 would be 105 x 71, not 70.  So I'm going to have to squeeze the images down a pixel in width when I create the thumbnails.

I've selected the photos to resize, right clicked and selected "Save Photos As...".  Looking at the dialog in the Image Processing section, I'm choosing:

Cropping: Apply
Scaling: to custom width: 105 height 70 in pixels
Resolution: 72 pixels per inch

When I do this on my 580 x 392 images, PM is creating thumbnails that are 104 x 70, not 105 x 70 as I specified.

Am I doing something wrong, or is it not possible to do what I want to do?

It should just work, but you may have found a bug.  I'll see if I can reproduce the problem and fix it.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Kirk:

Any news on being able to replicate this problem?

No, nothing to report yet.

Since I haven't been able to get to it yet, I will try to get one of the QA folks to reproduce it.

Hi Lesleyworld,

Everything is working as it should with v4.4.3.2 on my Sony Vaio XP  SP1 PC. I did some more testing to insure that the pixel count changes at the .5 round up rule. Eg,

Source file size        PM Save as size ( to fit box = 105 pixels )

580 x 392                  105 x 71   ( 70.96 rounded up )
580 x 391                  105 x 71   ( 70.78    "       )
580 x 390                  105 x 71   ( 70.60    "       )
580 x 389                  105 x 70   ( 70.42 rounded down )
580 x 388                  105 x 70   ( 70.24    "         )

The source files were created in Photoshop CS2's Image Size dialog and saved as new jpegs.

Did you use the to fit box option or the percentage option in the Save as dialog to re-size the thumbnails?  This test was done using the to fit box option. I hope this helps.

Bob:

Thanks for going through this, but I think my problem is that I want to distort the size of the resized image, not do a straight resize like you are demonstrating.   While I agree that a straight resize of an 580 x 392 image would produce a 105 x 71 image, I need the final image to be 105 x 70.  So while I want to fit the height to 105, I want to fit the width to 70, not the 71 that would be in proportion.

I'm gathering that PM won't let me manually adjust both the height and width, just one?

Correct. Photo Mechanic goes to great lengths to preserve the original aspect ratio of your images.  It does not allow you to stretch or squash your photos.

Thanks for clarifying that.  I'm unfortunately still trying to find a way to bulk resize photos to slightly change their perspective.

If you can do a little scripting, ImageMagick can do all of that.  See here for more info.
