Customize IPTC Info & Stationery

I'm customising the IPTC Info and Stationery (via the 'accessibility' preferences). So far so good but I'm not clear what the 'Enabled' checkbox does. Visible is obvious. Why would I enable or disable a field I'm making 'invisible'?

Disabling a field makes it 'read-only'.  Enabling or disabling a non-visible field has no net effect.
