Trialling PhotoMechanic . . . anyone know if its possible to vary the font syle + size for the text which appears below images on printed contact sheet? Seems to be fixed as one size and font . . .

No, it is not adjustable.

Is this still the case?

Yes, no changes have been made in some time now.  The font is a system font that can display all Unicode characters, and the size is automatically calculated to be the largest font that will display the text in the space available.
