When in a catalog and you select multiple images you can easily colour code by pressing ctrl + 1 etc but it doesnt let you press T to tag multiple images at once

You have to press Command-T or Ctrl-T (macOS or Windows).

@Kirk,

Soizic is right: CMD+T doesn't work. Something happens (selected images are deselected), but the images are not tagged/untagged as they should.

Since I always tag multiple files with CMD++ and CMD+-, I never noticed this. @Soizic, @CharlesTheTog, this could be a work-around for you for now too.

A similar inconsistency exists that I cannot rate multiple selected images with just pressing a number, but I have to also use the CTRL key

That is done on purpose to prevent accidental changes to multiple files. What is described in this post, however, is an inconsistency that should not exist.
