Problems with DNG-Files of my Galaxy S8
« on: April 29, 2019, 07:28:38 AM »
Hi,

since Android 9 - Pie, the Cameraapp of my S8 has the option to save photos in JPG and additionally in Raw (DNG). When loading a Foder with these files, the JPG is shown correctly, the DNG has no thumbnail and it's filename is shown in red. I also cannot open the DNG in viewermode bei doing a doubleclick.
When opening a JPG in viewermode, I can browse forward to it's DNG, but also the full Image will not be shown in the viewer.

Has PM problems with DNG-Files or will there be no chance to work with them in PM?

PM can handle DNG files just fine (I use 'm all the time). It's likely at the one hand that there is no embedded preview in the DNG file (hence the blank thumbnail and preview) and on the other hand it is also very likely that the file is incorrectly formatted (Samsung is a bit notorious for writing partially incorrect files). Can you share a test dng file straight from the camera (together with its jpg)?

Cheers,
Hayo

Of course, here are a DNG, and the JPG file:

Btw. the same happens with DNG-Files made with Lightroom Mobile.

I had a look at the files and there is nothing wrong with the DNG file, structurally (on the other hand, there is quite a bit wrong with the JPG, seems Samsung (Android?) is still writing malformed JPG file, nothing bad or preventing you to work with them, but still).

The problem is that there isn't an embedded preview in it, at least not one at the expected place (there is one, but it's not at the “normal” place, besides it's thumbnail sized, only 496x280 pixels so quite useless).

So for your Samsung, I suggest you either shoot RAW+JPG or you edit them in e.g. Camera Raw or Lightroom and have it update the DNG (and preview).
Interestingly, I saved again as DNG in camera raw and the file size went down from 18MB to just over 9 MB, from analysing the differences, this seems to be due to the (lossless) compression of the raw data as used by Adobe.

Hope this helps,
Hayo

Hi Hayo,

I think I will avoid usinfg my S8 in the future and will use more my Canon G7X2. The Galaxy S8 would have been a comfortable solution, but if it works not good, I will do it another way.

Hi Robert,

That's a solution of course, but I'm not saying the S8 is doesn't work well, it's just that it writes DNG files without a preview (which can be added after the fact quite easily using e.g. Lightroom or Camera Raw). But yes, it's not as straightforward as with files that do have a preview ;)

Or you can update a whole folder of them with the free Adobe DNG Converter.  You can tell it to produce large previews.  Works well and can run unattended until it completes.

OK, I will give it a chance and will try these ways.

Maybe this would be a great feature for PM. PM is the first Software on my computers, which touches my photos. So PM should be able to correct such Problems. There is so much I can do with PM, why not generate previews, if they are not there?

If you install the Adobe DNG Converter, you can update the previews from within PM.  Select all of your images that need updating.  On the Tools menu, choose "Convert RAW to DNG..." and PM will drive the process for you.
