Can't rename photos in PM5 build 19749 for Mac

Hi, running OS X High Sierra, and get this error message when I try to rename a file: An error occurred while renaming photo _______. The operation will be cancelled, and the original filenames will be restored.

Photos are on an external USB 3 WD portable hard drive, to which I have read and write permissions according to the Info panel through the Finder. I've never had this problem before!
