Can't group untag
« on: January 11, 2020, 08:36:53 PM »
I displayed all Tagged photos.  Used Select All (Command - A) and then Command - to untag them.  They were not untagged.  The tags were not changed.

Strange, this works fine for me (same OS end PM6 versions)…

Can you untag individual files just fine, or does that also not work for you?

Upon further investigation the problem seems to be tied to only some images.  Those images cannot have their tag status changed by any method.  If tagged, they won't untag, if not tagged they can't be tagged.  They are all .NEF with .XMP sidecars.

Are they perhaps write protected? Can you share an example? (they're likely to big for mail so use e.g. Wetransfer)

That's good, but doesn't resolve my dilemma.

No it doesn't solve your issue, but does indicate that there is nothing wrong with the file (or PM), so it is likely it is something system related. What medium are they stored? Have you tried moving the files to another (internal) disk?

They're on the internal SSD.

Copied (not moved) to another folder on the internal drive, same problem.

Copied to an external drive (RAID array), same problem.

Russ,

Looks like this is due to some ancient logic in PM whereby our old EOF preference for the tag setting was being honored over any new XMP setting.  This was only for the EOF preference for tag (you can freely change the rating / color class and update IPTC info).

I'm removing this "sticky EOF tag preference" logic to make this work correctly.

I suggest you select all these photos, then use the Tools menu Delete Metadata command and select only the EOF Preferences checkbox.  You should see all those tags go away on the ones that were stuck.  The EOF prefs are not needed anymore (but they are honored in case you have an old file that had no XMP).  Since you have your preference set to Not Modify RAW files, this EOF block will remain until you actually tell PM to delete that metadata with the Tools utility.

Thanks for finding this issue.

Regards,

Dennis,

I don't completely follow what PM is doing, but I did as you requested and it solved the problem, except for the .psd images which have no XMP.  Those images are a bit of a mystery as some have crop masks, and the crop masks also cannot be removed.  Is this a related or separate problem?

A sample is too large to attach, but I can PM a link if you want to see a sample.

Thanks,  Russ

Russ,

Well this is again an EOF preference that was added from older version of PM.  This time it is for storing the crop.

Remember, PM existed well before XMP so these are some of the "remnants" of how we chose to store user "preferences".

This could also be fixed with a Delete Metadata command, but unfortunately for PSD files we don't currently have an implementation to remove our EOF preferences.  I've added this and it will be in the next build.

BTW - you can change the crop all you want but you just can't remove it.  If you remove it (from the XMP) then PM still "finds" the old EOF pref crop (as a default) and it re-appears.  I will likely just remove any existing EOF prefs on any update of the PSD just to make sure its gone, as everything is XMP these days.

HTH...
