Adding Images
« on: April 24, 2020, 06:04:27 AM »
When I was using Cumulus Single User 8.0 for many years to manage my archive I liked how it worked and would have stayed with it, but it hasn't been updated for the single user.

So here are a few things that could make Photo Mechanic Plus Catalogue better from my experience.

  • Do not add duplicates – as default and option to turn this off
  • Give option to change where original files are located. Going forward hard drives wear out and need to be replaced. Need a simple way to point to the new hard drive

How are duplicates determined?

Give option to change where original files are located. Going forward hard drives wear out and need to be replaced. Need a simple way to point to the new hard drive

If you move them from within the app this should work already.  If it isn't working then this is a bug.

Or are you talking about wanting to move the files via the OS (Finder/Windows Explorer) or a backup program?  And then later tell Photo Mechanic Plus about it after the fact?

I really don't know how many. I just noticed that I had duplicated a few folders to different hard drives so that when I do a search they show up for as many places as I put them. Some were on three different hard drives.

it would be great if the software recognizes the file itself as a duplicate.

I don't have the problem with replacing hard drive to fix right now, but would like to do this in the future.

OK, and I'm asking how do we determine that they're the same file?  By checking that they're identical files (checksum)?  By checking that they appear to look the same?

We're thinking of adding a feature where duplicates can be detected based on how closely they look visually.  If you don't add all of the items to the catalog then you won't know where your duplicates are.  Knowing where they are via a similarity search will help users clean up their archive.

It is the exact same photo. I have some folders that were on one hard drive that was going bad that I copied to other hard drives. When I imported them it let me do that. Would like it to show they exist already and not duplicate.

Thank you for your feedback.  We may consider this approach as well.
